RELATIONSHIPS… MAKING IT WORK.

Love, is one of the most profound emotions known to human beings. Love, comes in different flavours, shades and tones, but everyone seeks its expression in a romantic relationship with a compatible partner. A good relationship is more than something we want—it’s something, we need, to be at our happiest, healthiest, most productive peak or limit. But trust me, supportive and fulfilling relationships do not just spring forth automatically, they grow like hibiscus planted on a desert in our heart,  an investment in time, energy, as well as social skills that can be learnt overtime make up the watering can and its content that aid rapid but steady growth.

Failed relationships, happen for many reasons. And the failure of a relationship is often a source of great psychological anguish. Most of us have worked (un)consciously to master the skills necessary to make relationships flourish. However, for those still behind the veil, below are some of the many reasons relationships don’t work in this generation:

The advent of internet and the subsequent rise in the use of social media, has caused so many relationships to suffer fatal blows below their belts. A lot of millennials now shape their relationships based on other people’s public display on social media with the hashtag #couplegoals, #relationshipgoals. We have forgotten that people  always put their best foot forward. Sometimes, these couples are trying to overcompensate their inner-core for their unhappiness and brokenness. In other words, social media has become the pseudo-reality of scars in stormy relationships looking all bright and gay through media eyes.

The impact of social media on our relationships brings a quest for perfection. We are always looking at that perfect relationship without working on our imperfections that will make our relationships better. That is why most people live in the “I WISH” world rather than “DOING”. Well there is nothing like a perfect relationship that social media has created because we are all imperfect beings.

Also, we live in a world where we would rather throw things away than fix them, this might sound cliché but it is the truth. That’s why we have so many relationship problems around, a quick check on Joro Olumofin’s blog reveals a large number. Why not appreciate who you have and believe in him or her? You can begin by trusting them, (it’s hard but) you can also start working around your problems rather than throwing blame around like discus or javelin.

Another mistake we make as human is that we think we have everything well figured out but we are always most times wrong. We would rather be distant from the ones close to us and be close to the one that are of little or no importance to us. We fail to understand the type of world we currently live in is one where no one should be taken for granted, everyone deserves a pound of respect. Respect your better half, pray for them, appreciate and love them. Show that you are better no matter what.
